Adult Literacy Statistics Synthetic Estimates

This site provides synthetic estimates of adult literacy and census predictors for any geographic area. Synthetic estimation uses statistical models to combine information from different data sources to estimate information not available in any one source by itself. The synthetic estimates of adult literacy proficiency presented here combine information from the National Adult Literacy Survey (NALS) and the 1990 U.S. Census to estimate adult literacy proficiencies in geographical areas not adequately sampled by NALS.

International Adult Literacy Survey (IALS)

The 1994 International Adult Literacy Survey is the first multi-country and multi-language  assessment of adult literacy.  The goal was to develop scales for comparisons of literacy performance among people with a wide range of abilities, and to compare literacy across cultures and languages.
